Title of Lesson: A Day in the Life of Andrew Jackson

South Carolina State Standards Addressed:

3.1.2 The learner will demonstrate an understanding of the way individuals, families and communities live and work together now and in the past. The student should be able to identify historical resources in the local community.
3.2.7 The student should be able to describe the key events and effects of the Revolutionary War on South Carolina and the local community.
3.6 The learner will demonstrate an understanding of government, its origins and functions, including civic life, politics and government.
3.10.2 The learner will demonstrate an understanding of the world in spatial terms. The student should be able to use maps, globes, graphs, diagrams, and photographs to analyze the location and spatial distribution of physical and cultural features in South Carolina.
3.10.8 Describe how the physical and human characteristics of places and regions change over time.

Lesson Description:

The following activity was designed for teachers to introduce the 7th President of the United States and the accomplishments he made during his life. This activity should be completed prior to the field trip.

Focus Questions for Students:

1. Who was Andrew Jackson?
2. Why was he so important?

Teacher Preparation:

Complete steps in "Plan your Discovery" and complete the pre-site activity prior to the field trip.

Procedures:
Utilizing objects in the classroom teacher kit do the following activities:

I. View the 20-minute video about Andrew Jackson. Answer the following questions:
1. Who was Andrew Jackson?
2. Why was Andrew Jackson important?
3. Where did he become a hero?
4. How many times was he President?
5. Where was he born? What year was he born?
6. Where was his boyhood home?
7. Where was his adult home?
8. When did he die?
9. Where is he buried?

II. Use the 1825 Mills Map and enlarged photos to identify locations associated with young Andrew Jackson's life in the Carolina's between 1767 and 1784.

III. Using the enlarged photos and student drawn pictures, have students make a timeline of Andrew Jackson's life. Include some of the following important dates:
* 1767 Andrew's father dies
* March 15, 1767 Andrew Jackson was born in the Waxhaws
* July 4, 1776 Declaration of Independence signed
* June 20, 1779 Hugh Jackson dies after the battle at Stono Ferry
*May 29, 1780 Col. Tarleton attacks and defeats Col. Buford
*August 6, 1780 Battle of Hanging Rock
* April 9, 1781 skirmish at Waxhaw Meeting House
* April 10, 1781 Andrew and Robert captured and taken to Camden goal
* April 25, 1781 Battle of Hobkirk's Hill
* November 1781 Andrew's mother dies in Charlestowne
*September 28 - October 19, 1781 Seige of Yorktown; British surrender
*December 14, 1782 British troops leave Charlestowne - last military action of American Revolution
*1784 Andrew Jackson moves to Salibury, NC to study law
*1804 Andrew Jackson purchases The Hermitage property in Nashville, TN
* June 12, 1812 U.S. declares war against Great Britain
* January 8, 1815 Battle of New Orleans - Andrew Jackson becomes a national hero
* August 11, 1824 Andrew Jackson answers J.H. Witherspoon's question regarding his birthplace
* 1828 Andrew Jackson elected 7th President
* 1832 Andrew Jackson re-elected President
* June 8, 1845 Andrew Jackson dies at The Hermitage
* 1952 Andrew Jackson State Park opens to the public

IV. Use the Polaroid camera to document a day in your student's lives. For example, saluting the flag in the morning, doing class assignments, eating lunch, playing at recess, cleaning up classroom, and preparing to leave for the day. Create a poster using the photos titled "A Day in the Life of ________'s 3rd Grade Class".
