Title of Lesson: A Day in the Life of Andrew Jackson

South Carolina State Standards Addressed:

3.1.2 The learner will demonstrate an understanding of the way individuals, families and communities live and work together now and in the past. The student should be able to identify historical resources in the local community.
3.2.7 The student should be able to describe the key events and effects of the Revolutionary War on South Carolina and the local community.
3.6 The learner will demonstrate an understanding of government, its origins and functions, including civic life, politics and government.
3.10.2 The learner will demonstrate an understanding of the world in spatial terms. The student should be able to use maps, globes, graphs, diagrams, and photographs to analyze the location and spatial distribution of physical and cultural features in South Carolina.
3.10.8 Describe how the physical and human characteristics of places and regions change over time.

Lesson Description:

The following classroom activity was designed to reinforce the material covered in the field trip and for teachers to assess the knowledge gained from the visit to Andrew Jackson State Park.

Focus Questions for Students:

1. How is your life similar to Andrew Jackson's childhood?
2. How are they different?

Materials/Resources:
Materials for post-site activities will be given to you the day of your field trip.

Teacher Preparation:

Complete steps in "Plan your Discovery", pre-site and on-site activities and return the post-site materials with your evaluation form.

Procedures:

1. Have students create an illustrative storybook of Andrew Jackson's childhood.
2. Have students write a diary entry describing a colonial period chore.
3. Have students compare and contrast today with 1780.
4. Have students keep a diary over the weekend. Include time they wake up, what they ate, chores they did, things they did for fun, what time they went to bed. How does this differ from a weekend in colonial times?
