Title of Lesson: Rice: How its rise and decline shaped the economy of South Carolina

South Carolina State Standards Addressed:

3-2.6 Summarize the contributions of settlers in South Carolina under the Lords Proprietors and the Royal colonial government, including the English from Barbados and the other groups who made up the diverse European population of early South Carolina. (H, G)
3-2.7 Explain the transfer of the institution of slavery into South Carolina from the West Indies, including the slave trade and the role of African Americans in the developing plantation economy; the daily lives of African American slaves and their contributions to South Carolina, such as the Gullah culture and the introduction of new foods; and African American acts of resistance against white authority. (H, E, P, G)
3-4.1 Compare the conditions of daily life for various classes of people in South Carolina, including the elite, the middle class, the lower class, the independent farmers, and the free and the enslaved African Americans. (H, E)

Lesson Description:

The activities provided are to allow students to prepare for interactive demonstrations during the On-Site program. Students will be introduced to the rice culture of the Lowcountry and will write a journal entry to be used during the program. Students should be encouraged to write down any questions not answered in class and bring them on the day of the program.

Focus Questions for Students:

These questions will be answered during the On-Site program. Teachers should ask the questions beforehand to prepare students for the topics that will be discussed during the program.

1. Why did rice grow so well in the Carolinas?
2. What government controlled South Carolina during colonial times?
3. How did the land change with the growing of rice?
4. What other products were grown or made for the purpose of making money?
5. What happens when old things are replaced with new ones?

Activities:
Activity I
There are two worksheets included. Students must read the write ups and then do the worksheets. The correct answers will be included. For the worksheet on rice show the students the packet of rice so they are familiar with what they will be seeing the day of the program. A complete demonstration of rice processing techniques will be done with the students participating.

Activity II
Students will write a journal entry and bring it with them to the program. Directions are included for the type of entry to write.
