The Life of a Civil War Soldier – On-site Activity 2/
Interpreter Led

Grade Level: Fourth Grade
Time to Complete: 1 ¼ hours
Title of Activity: Civil War Camp Life

South Carolina Curriculum Standards Addressed:

4.1.15 – Compare and contrast the ways of life in the North and the South.

4.1.18 – Describe the Civil War and its effects on the nation.

4.5.5 – Describe how American citizens can participate in their government to influence the decisions and actions of that government.

Lesson Description:
This activity is designed to help the student better understand the living conditions of a Civil War camp. The student will experience the solider in a personal way, as period dressed interpreters create a living history display at the camp. The living history will include a Union and a Confederate soldier explaining what the different accoutrements are and their uses. The interpreters will discuss why they joined the army, and their experiences in it. The student will be prompted to talk about their experiences in training. At the end of the exchange, the interpreters will discharge all of the students from the army with reproduction discharge papers.

Materials / Resources Provided:
• Reproduction discharge papers.

Focus Questions:
1. How did camp life differ from North to South?
2. What was the difference between a fixed camp and that of a campaign?
3. Was it common for a soldier to be assigned to fight in the area he came from?
