Lesson Description:

Focus Question for Students:

1. What do the photographs, letters, diary entries, and artifacts say about the people who lived at Redcliffe?

Culminating Assessment:

See Post-site activities

Materials/Resources:
Materials for pre-site activities will be mailed with your confirmation letter.

23 Hammond Family photographs

Teacher Preparation:

Complete steps in "Plan your Discovery" and complete the pre-site activity prior to the field trip.

Procedures:

I. Have the students draw a picture and/or write a paragraph about one of their favorite things at home.  It can be an item (i.e. television, computer, video game), a room (i.e. bedroom, garage etc), or an activity (i.e. eating dinner, playing basketball, walking the dog).
These should be shared with their classmates, and if possible, brought with them to Redcliffe.
The guided tour will focus on specific items, rooms and activities at Redcliffe and compare the changing lifestyles between the mid-19th century and the present.

II. Show a picture of Redcliffe (overhead projector or other) and ask students if this is like their home.  Discuss the fact that the historic site which they are going to visit was someone's home for 120 years.

III. Show photographs of Hammond family members and other individuals that worked and lived at Redcliffe, and ask the students to write a few sentences describing what they think the pictures say about the people who live at Redcliffe.
