Lesson Description:

Students will review, apply and analyze the data and information from the on-site visit and use those discoveries to solidify understanding of concepts of habitat, adaptations, erosion and accretion.

Procedures:

1. Have students move into their on-site groups and begin comparing their different quadrat lists.
2. In groups, students will be compiling a complete habitat list accumulated from the different quadrat examinations.
3. Once the students have a complete list, complete a diagram showing the shared species of each habitat and discuss reasons why certain species are found in certain habitats and not in others.
4. In groups, have students brainstorm erosion defense measures and have students categorize possible pros and cons of each method.
5. Have students answer follow-up question sheet that focuses on habitat and niche of plant and animal life and erosion and accretion causes and results.

Extension Ideas:

1. Have students write a short essay creating their own solution to erosion problems on Hunting Island.
2. Have students debate the issues related to barrier islands.
